Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan has given his nod to the long-pending demand for 2.5 FSI on Tuesday, ensuring faster redevelopment of these buildings, constructed by City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco).

Earlier, Cidco had suggested 3 FSI, while the civic body had proposed 2.5 FSI but the CM concluded that 2.5 FSI seems viable.
Chavan also gave the go-ahead for the slum rehabilitation authority (SRA) scheme to redevelop slum areas in the city. He also okayed regularization of unauthorized constructions undertaken by project-affected persons in the gaothans (See Box). Mantralaya sources said that the notification will be issued in around four days.
Lalit Satish, the CM's chief public relations officer told TOI that the final decision on these issues was taken during a meeting at Sahyadri guest house, on Tuesday. "I had taken this matter to the CM more than once as lakhs of Navi Mumbaikars are living under constant fear of ceiling collapses. Our effort has paid off," said Thane guardian minister Ganesh Naik.
Many people have raised objections to the CM's approval of 2.5 FSI.
RTI activist Sandeep Thakur said, "How can the CM approve a proposal like this? As per the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning Act, 1966, the civic body has to publish a notice and invite suggestions and objections from the public."
A report considering the objections and suggestions has to be sent by civic body to the director of town planning, where it is processed. "The UDD then issues a 'notification' amending the General Development Control Regulations (GDCR), incorporating the change in FSI," he added.
